Have to be honest, I am a huge fan of Taika Waititi. After watching Hunt for the Wilderpeople, he may have placed himself into “shut up and Taika my money” territory for me. If you are a Flight of the Conchords fan (or Rhys Darby fan), I really recommend checking out his stuff (like What We Do in the Shadows featuring his good friend Jermaine Clement).
He is easily the 3rd or 4th most popular director from New Zealand and I was very excited when he was chosen to helm the new Thor movie, Thor: Ragnarok. There was still the issue of the previous Thor movies being…. ummm… underwhelming, so the jury was still out as to how Waititi could put his comedic touches on the franchise while still adhering to the rules of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The #TeamThor shorts that were released were a pleasant surprise and perhaps proof that the mix could work.
Hemsworth has some comedic chops and the character of Thor has some innate campiness that can mined for some really funny moments. Moments that were not capitalized on in the previous Thor entries. Well the new teaser trailer is out, and it looks awesome so far. I am cautiously optimistic it can deliver considering the talent behind this project. My only concern is if Thor’s flat-mate Darryl is going to get any burn. I mean, who is going to craft Thor’s electronic letters?
